George Bennett, a West Virginia University graduate who founded four successful businesses, has been elected to the West Virginia University Foundation Board of Directors.

Bennett's selection came at the board's annual meeting Aug. 10. He will serve a three-year term.

Bennett earned his bachelor's degree in industrial engineering in 1967 and his master's and doctoral degrees in industrial administration from Carnegie Mellon University in 1971.

Early in his career, Bennett co-founded Bain and Co. and Braxton Associates, both highly regarded international strategy consulting firms. Later, he co-founded Symmetrix, a management consulting firm that specializes in helping large firms translate innovative strategies into cost-effective operating practices. He also co-founded Health Dialog, an international health care services company. 

In 2010, Bennett donated $1 million to support research in energy, nanotechnology, biomedical sciences and biometrics at WVU's Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.

In 1982, Bennett was inducted into WVU's Academy of Industrial Engineers and in 2010, he was inducted into the school's Academy of Distinguished Alumni.

In other Foundation business, 1974 WVU grad Robert Reynolds of Boston, president of Putnam Investments, was re-elected chairman of the board. He has been a member of the foundation's board since 2003. 

Gary Pell, who lives in Myrtle Beach, S.C., was re-elected vice-chairman while 1976 graduate Marcia Broughton, a Clarksburg resident and an attorney with the law firm of Jackson Kelly, was re-elected secretary. 

Joan Corson Stamp, a 1973 grad who lives in Wheeling, will serve again as assistant secretary. 

Gregory Babe of Pittsburgh was re-elected to a three-year term as a board directors, as was James Chamberlain of Thousand Oaks, Calif., J. Franklin Long of Bluefield, Va., William McCartney Jr. of Houston, Robert McMillan of Martinsburg, Verl Purdy of Charlotte, N.C., Mikki Van Wyk of Potomac, Md., and Alan Zuccari of Fairfax, Va. 

The board also recognized outgoing member Robert Ruffolo Jr. of Morgantown for service to the foundation. 

Private funds donated through the foundation go to support academic programs, student scholarships, faculty development and public service initiatives at WVU. The foundation is conducting "A State of Minds," with a goal of raising $750 million by the end of 2015.
