New Year's Eve is not the best time for a golf tournament, so the folks at Twin Falls State Park decided to host one in honor of Lewis D'Antoni's 100th birthday a few months early.

The long-time high school basketball coach and Twin Falls State Park golfer will become a centenarian this New Year's Eve, but his 100th birthday celebration golf tournament is scheduled for Aug. 31 at Twin Falls State Park.

The two-person scramble is open to the public.

"It's an honor to organize this event for Mr. D'Antoni," Twin Falls Golf Professional Brian Wetzel said in a news release. "He's been a pass holder at the park for many years; he made a hole in one on No. 4 when he was 91 years old; and he brings a gentleman's competition to the game of golf.

"His life story is as remarkable as his coaching career."

D'Antoni was born in Mercer County and became a standout athlete at Mullens High School. He attended Concord College and became a four-year letterman, team captain and all-conference player in football and basketball. D'Antoni also lettered in tennis for good measure.

He then began his career in education and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He became known as one of West Virginia's greatest high school coaches, spent 11 years as principal at Mullens High School and then spent time coaching at Chesapeake High School in Ohio where he was assistant principal for 12 years.

His lifetime victories totaled more than 450 and one state championship while at Mullens.

D'Antoni, with his late wife Betty Jo, is the father of Kathy, Mike, Dan and Mark. Mike D'Antoni, head coach of the LA Lakers is scheduled to play in the tournament.

Reservations for the tournament are required and can be made by calling 304-294-4044.
