The former mayor of Grant Town was sentenced Monday in Marion County Court.

Robert Riggs Jr. was sentenced to 30 days in the North Central Regional Jail and three years of probation.

In May, Riggs pleaded guilty to three felony charges; embezzlement, forgery, and uttering. Riggs embezzled more than $9,000 from the Grant Town Volunteer Fire Department.

Court documents showed that police received a complaint from Grant Town's VFD Chief. The chief was concerned about four suspicious checks written from the Grant Town EMS checking account.

All of the checks were signed with the names, "Robert Riggs", and "Candice Pope", the secretary and treasurer of Grant Town VFD. Riggs and Pope were the only two legal authorities to write and issues checks from the account.

State police said the investigation revealed that Riggs forged Pope's countersignature without her knowledge.
