UPDATE: White Hall To Begin Sidewalk Project In Spring 2014

Update

White Hall's sidewalk project originally had four phases but Mayor Guy Ward said it can finish only one of them, due to a lack of funding.

Phase one will run a sidewalk from Mike's Electric to the State Farm office.

The other phases would have connected Walmart to White Hall Elementary School but Mayor Ward said those will have to wait until White Hall has more money.

Original story

Plans to install sidewalks on Route 250 in White Hall are in the works.

Mayor Guy Ward said the town desperately needs sidewalks for many reasons, but the utmost important is safety.

The project has four phases, but three of them are uncertain at this time.

The project's phase one is for a sidewalk to run from Mike's Electric on U.S. 250 ending at the State Farm office. Phase two will run from the White Hall Convenience Store to Mike's Electric.  Phase three will run from Gateway Plaza to Emerald Lane by White Hall Elementary School.  Phase four would go toward Walmart from State Farm.

Mayor Ward said everything but phase one may have to wait due to a lack of funding.

"The engineers looked at it and decided that we were going to have to put a retaining wall in during our second phase," Mayor Ward said. "This is going to increase the cost 200 or 300 thousand dollars probably. There's no way we can afford that ourselves and unfortunately we probably wont be able to get money."

The Department of Transportation has given White Hall $90,000 for each phase.

Mayor Ward said phase one will start next spring.
