County commissioners and other elected officials gathered along Court Street in Weston to hold Tuesday's ribbon cutting for the new Lewis County Judicial Annex, and gave many people their first chance to see the inside of the building.

While it may be new to the public, staff in some of the offices have already started to move in and can't wait to make the move final.

"It will be great. I'll be nice having the courtroom and the prosecutor's office right down the hall from us. I work in the circuit clerk's office, so we will be up there with new security, new technology and a great file room," said Amy Simmons, who has already had a chance to look at her new office space.

West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant was also on hand to celebrate the annex's opening. She said it's a great example of how West Virginia's frugal attitude can make big projects like this a reality.

"They knew they were going to have to save, like every West Virginian does is save for something that you want. So this county saved for it, they planned for it, and here we are, it's coming to fruition, and what it ultimately means is efficiency and better services to the people of West Virginia," said Tennant.

That efficiency will be a big change for Lewis County. The old courthouse doesn't have enough room for all the county offices, and County Commissioner Agnes Queen said the courthouse annex will help solve that problem, and make service easier for the entire county.

"Currently, we're scattered throughout the county, making it very difficult for individuals to actually do business with the county, be it in the court system or what have you. This will also be more secure," Queen said.
