Restaurant Road Trip: Smokehouse BBQ

Posted: Updated:

Drive just past the main entrance to Glenville State College and you'll see the Smokehouse BBQ. Owner Michelle Ramsey grew up around barbecue and decided to bring her cooking talents to Gilmer County.

"I'm actually third-generation barbecue. My grandfather used to own a restaurant in Florida, so I started working for him when I was 12 years old bussing tables and doing the salad bar, and when we moved up here there wasn't too many barbecue restaurants around here so my husband and I decided we'd give it a shot," Ramsey said.

She and her husband have succeeded. The restaurant will celebrate five years in September. Ramsey said that while they do have some items on the menu that aren't barbecue, her family recipes have been the centerpiece.

"I would have to say our best secret is going to be our dry rub. We dry rub all our meats and smoke it, and also our dry rub is the base for our barbecue sauce. So even though I won't divulge what's in the dry rub, I would say that dry rub would be our specialty," Ramsey said.

Ramsey has some faithful customers who live and work in the area, but even first time customers like Ken Cerny say they enjoy every bite they get.

"I actually had some barbecue yesterday, and I would say that this is right up here with the best I've had. The food was really good and the service was fantastic. The ladies who work here seem like they're very nice," said Cerny.

And that's another goal of Ramsey's. She said she wants diners to feel like they're eating at home, and she looks forward to seeing satisfied customers walk out her door.

"People are so happy when they're full. It's really nice to feed people because its nice to see them when they leave, they're nice and happy and full. That's the best part," Ramsey said.

Smokehouse BBQ is located at 10 N Lewis St, Glenville, West Virginia 26351. It is open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
