UPDATE: Construction Begins on New State Office Complex in Fairmont

Posted: Updated:

Update

After being delayed for a couple of weeks, construction on Fairmont's new State Building has finally started.

Commissioner Butch Tennant said contractors started moving equipment onto the property in August.

Monday, more equipment was moved on site and contractors began to dig up the land.

Commission said the building will boost the economy and bring more than 200 jobs to Fairmont.

It is expected to be finished in 2014.

Original Story

The state has awarded a contract for the construction of the new state office complex on Adams Street in Fairmont.

The Marion County Commission acquired the Fairmont Theatre property in April of 2010.

It hired Reclaim Company to demolish the 400 block of Adams Street in September of 2012. Reclaim finished its part of the project seven months ago.

The commission announced the winner of the contract at its meeting on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh based P.J. Dick Incorporated will handle the $17 million construction project.

Marion County Commissioners said contractors have been visiting the site this week, and construction will begin the very near future.

The Commission said the building will boost the economy and bring more than 200 jobs to Fairmont. Officials said the new complex will be five stories high.

"Commissioner Tennant said that they're going to start on the 26th and moving in on that date. We are yet going to complete another phase of the demolition and start a new one of the construction of the new state building. We are all excited about the opportunities, the job opportunities, economic opportunities," said Randy Elliot, of the Marion County Commission.

Construction will start Monday and should finish sometime next year.
