Friends of Deckers Creek Expresses Opposition to Well

Posted: Updated:

Friends of Deckers Creek held a public meeting on Thursday evening to discuss a proposed Wastewater Fracking Injection Well that it is opposed to.

The Energy Corporation of America plans to reopen a vertical gas well that was in operation from 1973 to 2006 in Masontown and turn it into the Injection Well. The well will only about 500 feet from Deckers Creek Watershed.

The main concern is the potential for contamination of ground water from the injection well. But that's not the group's only worry.

"It's not only really close to Deckers Creek, it's also even closer to the Deckers Creek Rail trail," said Elizabeth Wiles, the executive director of Friends of Deckers Creek. "And there's been a lot of money and time invested on making it a recreational destination and a lot of people have been using it in that way for the last ten years. And there could be a really big impact."

The Energy Corporation of America did come to Friends of Deckers Creek with the plan and information about the well. They are still in talks of the well and will look into things being approved this fall. If it is approved it will become operational in the summer of 2014.

Friends of Deckers Creek hopes the public will join them in sending letters to the Energy Corporation of America before the well opens next summer.
