CLARKSBURG -

The West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival is starting on Friday August 30th.

One of the first events for the festival is the annual pasta cook off which is in its 25th year.

Families and businesses prepared homemade pasta for the public and a panel of judges.

Prizes were awarded for best red sauce, best white sauce, and best sauce overall.

The winners received gift baskets as prizes and the overall winner got a new grill.

Festival board members said the festival brings families together.

"It's a smaller event. You actually get to taste homemade pasta by local families, and the biggest thing is you get to see lots of families from the area making their own homemade pasta, and showing what their customs and traditions are and what they've developed over the years," said Tyler Terango, of the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival.

The pasta cook-off also included a hot pepper eating contest, a homemade wine contest, and a canned pepper contest.

Starting on Friday, there will be the Coronation of Regina Maria XXXV, the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival Dancers, and various music.

Saturday's events include music all day and fireworks in the evening.

The festival wraps up on Sunday, September 1.
