Annual Fundraiser Crucial For Belington VFD

Posted: Updated:

The Belington Volunteer Fire Department's annual gun bash will be even more important this year.

The annual event helps the fire department raise money to keep itself going year round.

The problem is a 10-day long fire earlier this year at Sisolack's Truck Repair near Belington.

A tanker truck filled with propane ignited and burned for ten days.  Fire crews had to be on scene around the clock to prevent an explosion, an effort that has set the department back hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The department will have to spend money to replace some of their equipment in addition to other planned updates to their equipment.  Some of the apparatus in the department is almost old enough to qualify for antique plates.

That's money the department will have a hard time replacing.

"It's been a financial burden on the fire department, and we're still trying to recover from that. We're just hoping that people will recognize the service that we provide," said Belington Fire Chief Phil Hart.

People can purchase tickets for the annual event from members of the Belington Volunteer Fire Department.  This year entrants can win prizes like one of 40 guns, cash prizes, or even a brand new 2013 pickup truck.
