Glenville State Opens Parts Of New Waco Center

Posted: Updated:

There's still plenty of work yet to be done on the new Waco Center at Glenville State College, but enough has been completed to bring the Land Resources Department into the state of the art building to start the new year. And it's set up to be a great host for the department.

"They get a little of all the different courses, environmental, a little of forestry and all that. They can talk to the landowners about the impacts of roads if roads have to be put into their property, that kind of thing," said Department Chair Milan Vavrek.

Students on campus said they're enjoying the move as well. Although it's separated from the main campus, that actually works well for the department, as it sits just off the acres of forest the department uses to practice. And despite the construction, it's worked well so far.

"We're outside a lot. It's a big change because we're used to doing the same thing around the old landscaping at Eberle, so we're having to work around all the new construction now, but it's a give and go process," said sophomore student Courtney Cutlip.

Vavrek said the new building doesn't just benefit the college. Training students for careers in resource management, whether as a forester or a landman, also helps contribute to the economy throughout the region, while maintaining everything the land has to offer.

"It kind of demonstrates the college's agreement that Land Resources is a central role for the college, but also for the region. We manage our natural resources effectively and sustainably," Vavrek said.
