Veterans Connect With Employers at Clarksburg Job Fair

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs said there are almost 200,000 veterans in the state of West Virginia.

Some of them need jobs. Congressman David McKinley and other state officials helped to give veterans the opportunity to be connected with hiring agencies.

The second annual Veterans Jobs Fair, held at the Clarksburg Armory, brought more than 70 employers who are looking to fill immediate open positions. People looking for employment had the opportunity to meet employers from government agencies, schools, and local businesses.

Dave Berger is a Vietnam veteran and said the military taught him a lot of skills he can use in the workplace, including teamwork.

"I think that's one thing that is a success for any business or any or any function to do," said Berger. "If you have to rely on yourself, or to work with somebody that's gone half the time, taking a smoke break or coffee break. If you work together and handle things together I think you got a step ahead."

The job fair was held for anyone that is in need of a job, not just veterans, but its point was to highlight veterans' skills.

"Most importantly we're trying to emphasize that we have a large number of veterans in this area and we have a lot of government agencies that hire veterans because of their great work ethic," said Delegate Richard Iaquinto (D-Harrison County). "And then also, their commitment to their country."

Some interviews took place on the spot, and a few people were even hired.

Veterans had a number of different options to choose from. Berger found a few employers that he was interested in and was looking for something that would fit for them both.

"Nothing too technical that wouldn't be beneficial to both sides," Berger said. "Employer and employee. Something that I can function with and it will be profitable for both of us."
