Harrison County School Implements Random Drug Testing Policy

Posted: Updated:

A school in Harrison County is implementing a random drug testing policy this year.

United Technical Center will randomly test about 20 students each month.

Some staff members, volunteers and administrators will also participate.

Students refusing to take the test will face automatic suspension.

A failed test will result in extra counseling.

"The state has sort of dictated this to career centers because we have equipment. Students have access to fire, welding, heavy equipment, needles in the LPN and therapeutic services program," said Mike Queen, of the Harrison County Board of Education.

The policy will take effect October 1.

Queen said a county-wide policy is inevitable.

Schools in Doddridge County are also considering the policy.
