The Huntington Area Food Bank recently received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the nation's leading independent charity evaluator.

HAFB currently is the only charity in West Virginia with the rating.

"We are honored to receive Charity Navigator's highest rating," HAFB Board of Directors President Debra Johnson said in a news release. "Our supporters deserve accountability, and this distinction reflects our commitment to our mission of ending hunger in our region."

Approximately one-fourth of the charities evaluated by Charity Navigator receive the four-star rating, and the HAFB's review indicated it "outperforms most other charities in America," according to Charity Navigator's President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Berger.

Charity Navigator provides information on more than 6,000 charities throughout the nation, based on the financial state of each, and the organization uses a numbers-based rating system to assess the charities based on their financial documentation.

The Huntington Area Food Bank is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, affiliated with Feeding America, and it serves a 17-county region throughout West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio through nearly 200 feeding programs.
