Monongah Town Council Appoints a New Mayor

Posted: Updated:

On Monday, Monongah Town Council met to determine for a final time who would be mayor.

Council went into executive session right after the start of the meeting. After Council reconvened, Mayor Bill McCombs announced his resignation, and council then opened the floor for nomination.

Council then appointed Councilman Gregg Vandetta as its new mayor.

Earlier this month, the West Virginia Ethics Commission ruled against the town's request to allow McCombs to remain mayor while being employed at the Monongah water plant. WV Ethics Commission gave McCombs 90 days to step down and for council to find a replacement.

Vandetta said he was kind of surprised to be nominated as mayor by council and gladly accepted the position.

"There really wasn't an easy solution to this thing. I know there's a lot of people that ran before that thought that they should be considered because they were on the ballot, but the election was actually over with so it wasn't an election issue anymore," said Vandetta.

Vandetta's appointment left an empty council seat and council filled that seat by appointing prior Mayor Bill McCombs. He also said that he and council thought that it was only right that McCombs was appointed to be on council.
