Philippi Police Department Moves, Plans For Growth

Posted: Updated:

The new headquarters for the Philippi Police Department is right on South Main Street in the Hu Myers Center. The department is in the process of unpacking and getting into its new facility, but officers have already moved their operations there. Philippi Mayor Jerry Mouser is happy to see the department in the new space.

"Personally I consider it a new beginning for the police department. It goes along with a lot of things that's going on. We've got a new chief, a new sergeant, we've gotten some new equipment," Mouser said.

The old site of the department is already cleared out. Officers have emptied the contents of the old house, and are already enjoying the difference that the newer, more modern building makes from their time there.

"It just wasn't built or equipped for a police department. Now we're in a very professional building, we have security measure in place, and it's just a more comfortable working environment. There's a lot more privacy. It just wasn't built or equipped for a police department," said Police Chief Jeff Walters.

And the new site will allow for some big changes to the department in coming months. Mouser said he's looking to add officers to the force by 2015. Both he and Walters said they'll be able to spend more time focusing on investigations and getting out to be more involved with the community at large.

"Basically, right now, we don't have the time to do the community policing, and we want to devote more time to drug enforcement, and more officers will give us more time to do that," Mouser said.
