Pierpont Community & Technical College Hosts Patriots Day Ceremony

Posted: Updated:

Pierpont Community & Technical College hosted a Patriots Day ceremony Wednesday morning to honor Marion County first responders.

Pierpont honored the police, firefighters, the rescue squad, and Marion County 911 Center employees for keeping residents safe.

It also was a time to reflect and remember those who died on September 11, 2001.

Hundreds of first responders died that day trying to save others. Their colleagues in Marion County said they would have done the same.

"There's nothing else I'd rather do. It's what I've done all my life. I consider it an honor and a privilege to go out and do what I do," said Cliff Vanpelt, of the White Hall Police Department.

"They do everything. From the ones who took me to the hospital when I had fallen to people that go into burning commercial buildings to responding to small accidents or large accidents. They are the ones who hold our hands, that talk us out of being terrified, that stick with us. Then pass us off and go on to the next thing," said Dr. Doreen Larson, of Pierpont Community & Technical College.

Doctor Larson said this was the first of many events the college plans to host for the community.
