The West Virginia Non-Profit Association offers benefits and services to strengthen organizations across the state.

It said it hopes to advance the non-profit sector in the public's eye. It wants to build awareness and public support for the importance and work of non-profits as well as bringing a voice to the policy arena.

It held a summit in Fairmont on Thursday to discuss how a nonprofit can stay out of the limelight with the IRS and as a way to showcase its association.

It touched on some of the history that led to the changing view by the IRS of nonprofit's, how to use the form 990 tax return as a marketing document to increase donations, how to build a good audit defense, and much more.

WVNPA Executive Director, Laura Lee Haddad, said it's important to educate individual non-profits on how to deal with IRS situations.

"Especially in the past years there has been more and more scrutiny on non-profits. Its how can non-profits make sure that they are in the position to deal with anything IRS related," she said.

Haddad said summits are the best way for nonprofit's to network and learn the value of being in the WVNPA.
