Alpha Natural Resources announced a reduction in its work force at 15 West Virginia mine locations Friday afternoon.

Approximately 70 employees were affected, said Alpha spokesman Steve Higginbottom. Alpha's 33 mines in West Virginia produced more than 14 million tons of coal through June 2013. The W.Va. mines represent half of the mines owned and operated by Alpha and its affiliates in Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming.

Alpha said it's working to find vacant positions to transfer the impacted employees. Eleven people at the Poplar Ridge mine in Webster County were affected as a result of the mine shifting from a seven-day work week to a five-day work week.
