BLACKSVILLE -

It was the home opener for Clay-Battelle football on Friday night, but to the Blacksville community, it was more than just the first kickoff of the year. It was the first time players took the field on their new turf.

Plenty of Monongalia County officials were in attendance to help dedicate Clay-Battelle's new stadium, which holds more than 2,000 fans and features a brand new press box.

Former coach and volunteer Joseph Statler, who was honored at the dedication, said the field was needed and means a lot to his community.

"Well, you look at the stands up there, they are nearly filled tonight. That tells it. And I'll tell you, all throughout the construction, cars would stop along the road, along the fence, everyday...maybe they'd stop two or three times a day...just to check to see what the progress was," said Statler. "They'd been waiting on this facility."

The complex serves as a multi-sport facility. Statler said the track is the first in the area.

"We don't have a lot of good walking tracks out here, so this is going to be used heavily by the community as a walking facility also," said Statler.

The Cee Bees went on to win against Bishop Donahue, 35-6.
