SHINNSTON -

Frontier Days in Shinnston is just around the corner.

The festival starts on Wednesday, but to kick it off a bocce tournament was held Sunday afternoon.

Thirteen teams of two competed to win the $150 prize.

The bocce tournament welcomed players young and old.

This is not the fist bocce tournament held in Shinnston this year. Rueben Purdue said it's a very popular sport.

"Bocce in this area is huge. The Italian population brought the game over with them. These courts were built several years ago by volunteers. We host four or five major tournaments a year and we have leagues as well. It's just part of a way to use our park and it's part of Shinnston's Italian heritage also," said Purdue, who is Shinnston's Community Development Director.

The tournament is leading up to a wide range of events this week.

"This whole weekend leads up to the festival. We had a cruise in downtown yesterday, today the bocce tournament, and then the carnival will officially begin on Wednesday. We have a lot of events we're looking forward to; we have some new events and some new musical entertainment. We'll have a professional wrestling show at the end of the week as well so we're getting geared up this weekend," explained Perdue.
