A local firefighter, who has trained thousands to help others, has died.

Mark Doty was the leader of the WVU Fire Service Extension. Doty was killed Wednesday morning in an incident involving an ATV in Marshall County.

Sheriff Kevin Cecil said the accident occurred on Birch Ridge at 7:30 a.m.

Cecil said it appeared Doty, who was hauling a small load of lumber, was pulling out of his driveway, when the ATV had some sort of mechanical problem.

The ATV went over a hill, hit a pine tree, and Doty thrown over a steep embankment onto a asphalt roadway, according to the sheriff's department. Doty died of a head injury.

The WVU Extension Service said its faculty and staff are deeply saddened by Doty's death and offer condolences to his family. It said his legacy will live on in our communities.

Under his leadership, WVU Fire Service Extension instructors have trained more than 18,000 firefighters this year.

The WVU Extension Service said Doty was instrumental in the development and the growth of the organization's annual Junior Firefighter camp, which attracts youth from across the nation to come to the State Fire Training Academy at Jackson's Mill each summer.

Doty's funeral arrangements have not been announced at this time.
