The West Virginia University Heart Institute showed its heart today by offering free heart exams to employees of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department.

Doctors and nurses performed EKG screenings, cholesterol screenings, and blood pressure monitoring.

The sheriff's department employees also had the opportunity to talk to a cardiologist about their different risk factors.

"They do a great job of protecting us and giving to the community and we thought it was a good opportunity for us to give back to them. The second reason is, their jobs tend to be really stressful and a lot of times tend to be very sedentary. It puts them at a greater risk for things like hyper-tension," said Dr. Bradford E. Warden of the WVU Heart Institute.

The Heart Institute said anyone can be at risk for heart disease.

Some factors, such as age, sex, or family history, can put a person at higher risk for coronary heart disease. These factors cannot be modified, but a number of others can be.

These include cholesterol level, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and being overweight and sedentary.

The WVU Heart Institute's cardiac team uses the most current diagnostic procedures to detect and evaluate mild to life-threatening heart problems in a new, state-of-the-art facility.

It will have a booth at the WVU Healthcare Expo at the Morgantown Mall on Friday, October 4.
