MORGANTOWN -

Chiari malformations are structural defects in the cerebellum, which is the part of the brain that controls balance. Morgantown joined cities all around the United States in a walk to bring awareness for Chiari.

More than 100 people joined in the Morgantown Conquer Chiari Walk Across America. Participants walked up and down Patteson Drive to bring awareness to the disease.

The Morgantown Police Department assisted in helping the group cross to walk on Patteson Drive.

There were also speakers that are affected by Chiari.

"If you have Chiari you might learn something that you didn't know because Chiari, they say it's rare, but it's more common than people think," said Debbie Williams, the Conquer Chiari Walk Host. "People need to know more about what goes along with Chiari because there's lots of other symptoms and things that can be caused by Chiari. So that's why we're here, to bring awareness. It would be interesting to hear some of the speakers to hear how they've been affected by it."

There was also bracelets, information and other awareness items for people to purchase and learn more about the disease. Silent auctions and raffles were also available for people to participate in.

The walk was free to participate in but if a walker wanted a T-shirt there was a $25 donation fee.
