Third Public Hearing Held in Barbour County for Possible School Closures

Posted: Updated:

On Tuesday evening, Barbour County Board of Education held its third public meeting regarding the closure of two of its elementary schools.

Both residents and parents were able to address the BOE and voice their concerns of possibly having two elementary schools, Volga Century and Mont Vernon Elementary closed. Children from both schools would have to attend Philippi Elementary.

Parents said they're concerned with the overcrowding of students in classrooms. Parents also said that some of the students would have to travel an hour to an hour and a half to get to school and would like the BOE to "save their small schools."

"A smaller classroom the children are going to retain the information more where if you get a bigger classroom people are going to slip thought the cracks. They say every child gets individual attention but you really can't do that in a big classroom with the time frame allotted, its impossible," said Mount Vernon parent Shawn Strushensky.

"I'm very glad I'm not a Board of Education member. The Board of Education is listening to the parents from Volga Century Elementary and Mount Vernon Elementary. They all care about their students and their concerned about their well being," said Philippi Elementary parent Annette Santilli.

The board of education will make a decision at their next meeting on Monday, September 30.
