Operation ID Provides WVU Students with Theft Protection

Posted: Updated:

Monday's West Virginia University crime statistics show burglary, larceny and theft were the only campus crimes that rose last year.

WVU police said students can protect themselves through Operation ID.

Operation ID is a program that registers students' computers, bikes, and textbooks into a database.

WVU Police Chief Bob Roberts said textbook theft is a growing problem but one that easily can be curbed.

"There are only certain places people can buy them back from. We can always go out to those buy back places to see if we can find those books. And if they have the markings in them, we can often find who took them, which reduces crime in the long run," Chief Roberts said.

The service is free. Call the WVU Police Department at 304-293-2677 for more information.
