Monongah Middle School Named a Blue Ribbon School

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Department of Education has recognized 286 schools across the country, including Monongah Middle School, as Blue Ribbon Schools.

Monongah Middle School was exemplary in two performance categories: improvement and high performing.

Principal Steve Malnick said the Blue Ribbon School designation is one of the highest honors a school can get and that he owes it all to the hard work of his staff and students

"It means a lot for the community. We have a great community here in Monongah. It's not a very big town but there's a lot of great things that happen here; a lot of pride in the community. This is one more things that the community and the students can put a feather in their cap for," Malnick said.

"You know we're here for a reason. We're here for the kids. I'm teaching because I love to teach. It makes it all worthwhile to know that what you have done as a teacher has been rewarded," said Beckie Parrish, a math teacher at Monongah Middle School.

Representatives from Monongah Middle School will go to Washington D.C. in November for a Blue Ribbon School recognition ceremony.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed the award on nearly 7,500 of America's schools in its 31-year history, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Education.
