FARE Holds 'Walk for Food Allergy' in Morgantown

MORGANTOWN -

Food allergies affect 15 million Americans and one in 13 children in the United States.

The FARE Walk for Food Allergy was held in Morgantown Sunday. The FARE Walk unites thousands of Americans seeking a safe and inclusive world for people with food allergies.

Food allergies are a medical condition that are often misunderstood, but can be potentially life threatening.

"We want to make sure that people not only are aware of the disease and the importance of being well prepared in case a life threatening reaction occurs," said Veronica LaFemina, vice president of communications at FARE. "But also that we need to raise money in order to fund research to find a cure. This is affecting more, and more kids. We've had a 50 percent increase in the prevalence of food allergies since the late 1990's and we don't know why, and we need to answer that question."

Participants in the walk were welcomed to take samples from the different allergy friendly foods provided, but were asked not to open anything on site.

The event raised around $11,000 at the time of the walk to help find a cure.
