    WVU fraternities, sororities and Student Government Association (SGA) members took part in an Earth Day cleanup of Morgantown on Thursday, April 24th. The event, which was re-scheduled, due to rain on Earth Day (April 22nd), encouraged students to clean up the city in which they attend school. A foundation that focuses on miner safety and health will announce its first round of recipients today, who will receive approximately $10 million in awards.


The Alpha Foundation was created as part of a "non-prosecution agreement" between the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of West Virginia, and Alpha Natural Resources after the Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster in 2010.

Alpha purchased Massey, which operated the UBB mine in Montcoal. Twenty-nine miners died in what's considered to be the worst U.S. mining accident in 40 years.

A portion of that settlement was set aside of safety purposes. The foundation announced its first round of companies to receive winnings.

Areas of focus include safety, health, safety and health management and training.


The foundation received more than 160 proposals in January 2013.

West Virginia University Foundation and the University of Kentucky are among the winners.
