A Harrison County judge has sentenced the father of a 5-month-old child that was taken to the hospital with broken ribs, internal bleeding, and burn marks.
Judge James Matish sentenced David Mazza to one to 10 years for child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury; one to three years each for two counts of child neglect resulting in injury; and one to three years for child neglect creating a risk of injury. Mazza could spend up to 19 years in prison. Mazza will receive credit for the time he has already served in jail.
Mazza pleaded guilty to the charges on Aug. 16. Following a pre-sentence report that was entered Wednesday, Judge Matish accepted Mazza's plea.
Judge Matish also ordered Mazza to pay court costs and to register with the West Virginia child abuse registry for 10 years following his release from prison.
Mazza's co-defendant, Sabra Hardman, pleaded guilty to similar charges and was sentenced in August.
