Local Business Offers ATV Safety Tips After Series of Accidents

BRIDGEPORT -

With a series of ATV accidents in the area recently, it's important to remember some safety tips when going out on a ride.

Three all-terrain vehicle accidents have happened within the last week: one in Adamston involving a man and teenage girl, one in Marion County, and one in Randolph county that killed one man.

Leeson's Import Motors in Bridgeport sells ATVs and offered some safety tips to remember.

"We recommend that you wear a helmet and goggles, all the safety apparel. We also recommend if you have children you follow the recommended age limits and all the ATVs have age limits," said Shawna Meril, the sales manager at Leeson's.

Meril said every size of ATV has an age limit, which is very important to follow.

"We have 50s and 70s which are six and older, the 90s are 12 and older, the 150s are 14 and older and everything else is 16 and older and not recommended for anyone under that age," Meril explained.

Meril said an introductory course is available for new riders.

"With any new ATV, there is an ATV training course that's age appropriate. It's through the ATV safety institute so when we sell a new model if you wish to take the training class we sign you up, and it shows them all the basics," said Meril.

The ATV Safety Institute offers some rules to remember:

1. Never ride on paved roads except to cross when done safely and permitted by law. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway.

2. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

3. Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people.

4. Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.
