CLARKSBURG -

Update:

The Harrison County Board of Education met on Tuesday evening in an emergency special meeting concerning the new Lumberport Middle School.

A gas well on the property is a safety issue for the school so the board met to discuss the issue.

The Board of Education voted 4 to 1 to pay Lorna Keim Gas Account LLC to plug the well.

"If you would go over there are, look it's a small area that's fenced around where there is currently a gas well. The problem is it's too close to where the school was going to be. It was never a problem as long as the high school was there because it was probably grandfathered in before the School Building Authority even existed," said Superintendent Susan Collins with Harrison County Schools.

The Board of Education will pay the company $172,000 to plug the well.

Original Story:

Lumberport Middle School students will soon have a new school right next to Lincoln High School.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday in Shinnston. Construction will begin immediately on the project.

Superintendent Susan Collins said the school's design is unique and will be completed quickly.

"We are the first in the state to do a design build school and we're doing just that. Hopefully by next January we will have students in this school. Not this January but January of the next year," Collins said.

Construction on the middle school will be $14 million.
