CHARLESTON, WV -

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has ordered all U.S. and state flags be displayed at half-staff all day Oct. 6 in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.

A service in Maryland will honor 81 fallen firefighters to mark the beginning of National Fire Prevention Week, which lasts through Oct. 12.

"It is important we honor our brave firefighters and the work they do each and every day to keep our communities safe," Tomblin said in a news release. "Today, we pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our citizens here in West Virginia and across the country.

"May we keep these men and women, along with their families, in our thoughts and prayers."
