BRIDGEPORT -

The American Heart Association and Steptoe and Johnson brought people together on Saturday for the Harrison County Heart Walk.

Businesses from around the area raised money all year long to help fund research and education on heart disease and stroke.

The chairman of this year's event said it's a very important cause to raise money for.

"Heart disease is the number one killer in the country. As everybody knows West Virginia in particular has a problem. All the research efforts and the educational efforts funded by the heart walk, it makes us all healthier and more knowledgeable in trying to avoid health issues down the road," said Walter Williams, the chairman of the 2013 Harrison County Heart Walk.

Williams said the walk has been going on the past 10 years and last year the heart walk raised about $50,000.

The walk was a 5K and was held at Bridgeport City Park.

There were representatives available from United Hospital Center to check blood pressure at no cost. UHC also gave out healthy snacks like yogurt and muffins.

Texas Roadhouse donated salads for the walkers to enjoy after the event.
