Update

The United Way of Marion County and the Marion County Chamber of Commerce teamed up to host the inaugural 'Dancing with the Stars competition' on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The United Way said the event raised more than $20,000 for its agencies.

Mary Jo Thomas and George Levitsky won the people's choice category and Bill Holmes and Dixie Yann won over the judges.

The agencies said the event was a success and they are looking for next year's dancers.

Original story

Stars of a different kind were out in Fairmont Saturday night.

The Marion County United Way and Marion County Chamber of Commerce teamed up to host the county's first Dancing with the Stars Competition Saturday night.

The event was co-hosted by WBOY's own Kelsey Pape.

Guests could vote for their favorite dancing couple of the night, and judges awarded points for their favorites as well.

Proceeds from the event can make a difference for Marion County families.

"I worked in my professional life in the welfare system and health and human resources, and were it not for the United Way agencies, so many people could have fallen between the cracks. And those United Way agencies stepped up to the plate and really helped out," said star dancer Mary Jo Thomas.

Fairmont State University hosted the event on its campus in Colebank Hall.
