Zombie 5K Race Supports Community Garden

Posted: Updated:

If you were to drive through Heston Farms on Sunday morning, you might have thought the zombie apocalypse was starting there. But those zombies were actually getting ready for the Dawn of the Race Zombie 5K. The race was organized by the Morgantown Roller Vixens. The team arrived on site at 9 a.m. to make sure everything was ready for the race.

"We've been getting the runners where they need to be, getting the zombies placed where they need to be, getting makeup done, getting creepy little kids set up. It's been going well!" said Roller Vixen and organizer Joanna Thompson.

Just after 11a.m., the first of four heats, totaling more than 150 people, left the starting place and traveled through zombie-infested trails. Runners dodged zombies fast and slow, and tried to hang on to their lives, marked by flags, before they became one of the undead. But the runners and zombies were working together to help support the Fairmont Community Garden to make improvements to the existing garden, and for the construction of a second one in a new location.

"For the physical structure of the gardens themselves, and the Oliver Park Garden in Fairmont. It's going to be a raised bed garden, so they have to buy all the materials and stuff to do that with, and then there are plants and seeds and everything that you bring," said Heston Farms' John Provins.

Of course, it's not just about the work. Runners in the race said they had a great time, too. Kristin Massie came from Butler, PA to support the Roller Vixens in their work. She made it through the race before the zombies could get her, and said the whole experience was a blast.

"It was really hard, and it was a lot of fun. There's a lot of people who are just amazing zombies out there. So it was scary and they were screaming and it was just really great," said Massie.

She got a pin to show off her survival, but not every one was so lucky. Those who didn't make it past the zombie horde were given a different pin with "Infected" written on it. Those who survived were eligible for a special prize.
