MORGANTOWN -

President James Clements delivered the State of the University address to the Faculty Assembly and students Monday at West Virginia University.

The address reviews the goals, challenges, and triumphs of the Mountaineer community.

Clements cited these positive indicators of momentum over the past four years. Enrollment grew by two percent to 32,595 while the figures for student diversity rose by about 28 percent. Annual private giving since 2009 has been about $117 million, much higher than the 10-year average before that of $55 million, according to officials. Sponsored programs have experienced an all-time high in the last four years. Healthcare operations statewide have grown from about 700,000 patients in 2008 to about 930,000 in 2012. With that growth has come an increase in revenue from $1.1 billion in 2008 to $1.65 billion in 2012, according to officials.

President Clements spoke directly to the staff and commended them on their strides this year with teaching and research, even with less funding than peer universities.

"We receive about $120 million less in state appropriations every year compared to our peers," Clements said. "So if you think about the job that you do great teaching, great research, great service, based on limited resources, we have a lot to be really proud of and a lot to be really thankful for."

The West Virginia University Strategic Plan for the Future was also discussed. The Strategic Plan for the Future 2020 includes five goals to better the university. Goal 1 is to engage students in a challenging academic environment, goal 2 is to excel in research, creative activity, and innovation in all disciplines, goal 3 is to foster diversity and an inclusive culture, goal 4 is to advance international activity and global engagement, and goal 5 is to enhance the well-being and quality of life of West Virginia's residents.
