A local middle school will use a grant to improve writing skills.

The U.S. Department of Education awarded a $20,000 grant to West Preston Middle School in Preston County.

The money will allow teachers to work with West Virginia University's National Writing Project to learn how to better teach students.

Teachers said it's an exciting partnership.

"K-12 and hire education all have the same goals in mind, and that's to better the education of our students. It only makes sense to have collaboration which is often something that is overlooked in the school system so this is a really exciting opportunity for us," said Keisha Kibler, a teacher.

The National Writing Project works with teachers to improve writing education across West Virginia.
