Local Students Attend NASA IV&V Day in the Park in Fairmont

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of middle and elementary school students from area counties were in Fairmont Wednesday for NASA IV&V's Day in the Park.

The program helps students experience careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.

The students learned about fossil fuels and flight, and got to hear from an astronaut.

NASA said this is the perfect age group to target.

"Most of the research is saying that students are deciding at younger and younger ages what they might want to do for a career path. so we want to try to get students as young as possible learning about the opportunities that are here in West Virginia that they can pursue in the high technology sectors," said Todd Ensign, of NASA IV&V.

Students from Rivesville Elementary and Middle schools; Pleasant Valley Elementary School; Fairmont Catholic School; Heritage Christian School; St. Patricks School; West Taylor Elementary School; East Dale School; and Mountain View Elementary School were in attendance.

High school students will visit the park Thursday to explore career options.

NASA employees are volunteering for the activities due to the government shutdown.
