We're more than a year away from midterm elections but some races are already starting up early.

Nick Casey was at the Lewis County Senior Center Thursday morning.

Casey is running for Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito's current seat.

Capito is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Senator Jay Rockefeller, who has announced that he will retire at the end of his current term.

Casey is a former state chair of the West Virginia Democratic Party and held the position from 2004 to 2010.

He said he wants to fix the issues he sees with the federal government.

"You know, something has gone terribly wrong in Washington. I look over there and think that there must be a better way to run our government. This is not what we learned in civics class, and that really is what inspired me to run," said Casey.

Casey also spent time in Weston visiting the Lewis County Courthouse and downtown businesses.

In addition to his time with the state Democratic Party, Casey has also worked as a CPA and lawyer in Kanawha County.

He said that after helping many other candidates run for office during his tenure with the state party, he thought the time was right to make a run for office himself.
