There are almost 50,000 fire departments in the United States, according to the National Fire Department Census Quick Facts. 71 percent of those fire departments are volunteer types.

Volunteer Fire Departments across the country run completely on donations and money raised by the department.

The River Road Fire Department held a Fall Festival to not only raise money for the department but to bring the community together for a day of fun. There were activities for kids, fire prevention safety classes, and tons of food to go around.

The Fall Festival also had a Queen, King, Princesses, Princes and Honorary Princesses and Princes. They were elected by how much money they were able to raise for the department.

"We just like to try to encourage people to come out and support the fire department," said Melanie Brown, the River Road Volunteer Fire Department's Fundraising Coordinator. "It's always hard for all of the fire departments to get funding and that's one of the things we're trying to do out here is to bring some funding into the fire department and keep them operating. We definitely don't want to lose our fire department, the more we can do for them the better."

This was the second annual Fall Festival held by the River Road Volunteer Fire Department. It said it hopes to hold many more in the future.
