Suspect fires shots at police during traffic stop in Nitro

Posted: Updated:

We are learning new details in an early morning shootout involving Nitro police.

Chief Brian Oxley says Officer Timmy Jarrell, a 9-year veteran with the police department, is the one who was shot at.  He wasn't injured in the attack. Jarrell also had his canine partner, Bullet, a 7-year veteran of the department, in his vehicle with him.  Bullet was unfazed by the shooting and helped search the area for evidence in the hours following the incident.

Oxley said Jarrell tried to pull over a 90's Ford Mustang around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning for improper registration.  The vehicle did not have a visible license plate on it, Oxley said.

The driver opened fire when Jarrell tried to pull him over, striking his police vehicle two times, Oxley said.

The officer returned fire before the driver sped off.  The shooter hasn't been caught.

Call Nitro police if you have any information.
