A ribbon cutting was held Wednesday, Oct. 16 for a new writing center for Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community and Technical College.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission funded the writing center under a proposal for an accelerated learning program to support a pilot Accelerated Developmental Learning project, according to a news release from FSU.

Employees said they have talked about getting a writing center for more than 10 years.

"We provide peer to peer tutoring which means all of our tutors are in fact undergraduates and they've been trained to help students take control of their writing. That's one of the biggest problems we've identified is that they feel intimidated, uncertain and they have more skills then they realize," said Dr. James Matthews, director of writing center.

According to the news release, the purpose of the center is to provide one-on-one peer tutoring to help students with writing assignments.

The writing center is open to students Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Jaynes Hall.
