The Division of Highways is preparing to test equipment before the first snowfall.

Six area counties are preparing snow removal and ice control strategies tailored to their particular conditions.

Officials said during severe storms crews concentrate on priority routes, and secondary routes could see a delay of 24 to 48 hours.

The road surface also impacts the type of treatment.

"A lot of states have pushed towards salt brine its pre treating. So you can get out there and treat it before the snow and ice can collect on the road. Plus it saves money because it's a mixture of salt and water we're using half of the road salt we would use," said Carrie Bly, media spokesperson for the Department of Transportation.

Statewide, the DOH will have 800 trucks, 158,000-tons of salt and 260,000-gallons of salt brine for the season.

The Monongalia County Division of Highways is one of the departments that is beginning preparations for winter snowfall.

Workers have been preparing their equipment the last couple of weeks for snow removal and ice control.

The state mandates all counties test its equipment during the fall months.

"We check the plows we check the wiring on the trucks we check the spreader boxes, make sure everything is calibrated properly make sure that everything is operational," said maintenance engineer Jeff Pifer.

The entire state has a snow removal budget of over $54 million for the upcoming season.
