MORGANTOWN -

Randy Mazey called it perhaps the most important day in the history of West Virginia University baseball Thursday when officials broke ground on the site of a new ballpark in Monongalia County.

At the University Town Centre, perched above the future location of the venue, the head baseball coach joined many other officials who helped make the new stadium possible. WVU president Jim Clements and athletic director Oliver Luck both spoke about the importance of such a venue for the university as well as the community and the state.

"It's all about cooperation and this is a great example of the university cooperating with county officials, with state officials," said Luck. "We'll have a ballpark that the Mountaineers will use, a ballpark that minor league teams will use, a ballpark that I think high school teams will use for a variety of events, community events. It's really a ballpark that is going to belong to the people of Mon County."

The ballpark is projected to be complete in approximately 15 months, at which time Mazey believes his program will have one of the top venues in the Big 12.

"With the move to the Big 12 conference that we made last year, it's one of the best baseball conferences in the nation. If you want to be nationally competitive with teams like that, your facilities have to be competitive," said Mazey. "I think we're not only going to be competitive, but I think we're going to surpass a lot of programs in this league with the facility that we're planning on building."
