CLARKSBURG -

The Harrison County Board of Education has confirmed that Liberty High School Head Football Coach Robert Shields has resigned due to medical problems.

Mike Queen, Harrison County BOE President, said Shields had been nursing an injured shoulder for several months.

Assistant coaches Chris Colombo and Russ Nutt will take over for Shields effective immediately.

Queen said he called Shields on behalf of the board, thanking him for his six years of service and dedication to the Liberty Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers are 0-6 on the season and will head to Grafton on Friday to take on the Bearcats.

We reached out to Liberty High School, but school officials declined to comment on Shields' resignation.
