Preston County Schools Participate in National 'Lights On After School' Event

PRESTON COUNTY -

Four schools in Preston County kept the lights on for some educational activities on Thursday, October 17th.

After School Explorers is a 25 week program that provides health, enrichment, education and dinner to students.

The Aurora, Bruceton, Fellowsville and Kingwood Elementary Schools' program joined the Nationwide 'Lights on After School' event.

Fellowsville had a fire prevention and safety workshop with the Fellowsville Volunteer Fire Department and K-9 Units from the local police department.

"I think it's a great event because parents can be involved in their child's education," said Susie Huggins, the Program Director of the 21st Century After School Community Learning Program. "They don't see what goes on during the day and so having an opportunity to have them come into the school and participate in some learning activities, see what goes on, have a healthy snack. Those are the kinds of things that really boast parents with helping their kids get better grades."

The event was happening the same time as Red Ribbon Week, which is encouraging children to stay drug free.
