Update

The pedestrian who was hit by a vehicle on Friday while helping a stranded truck driver has died as a result of his injuries, according to the Randolph County Sheriff's Department.

Robert Thompson Jr., 54, of Wintersville, Ohio, passed away Sunday evening, according to the sheriff's department.

Thompson was helping a tractor trailer driver fuel his vehicle when he was hit by a vehicle driven by James Gerlach, according to the sheriff's department.

Gerlach will be charged with DUI causing death.

Original story

A tractor trailer ran out of fuel on Route 50 eastbound, and a person who stopped to help fuel the truck was hit by a passing car, according to Doddridge County Sheriff's deputies on the scene.

The truck ran out of fuel after 6 a.m. while heading east near the Ritchie-Doddridge County line at Greenwood Road.

A person who stopped to help refuel the truck was hit by a Chevy Cavalier. That person was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment by HealthNet.

According to deputies, the man is around 50 years old and is in critical condition with a head fracture.

The driver of the Cavalier, James Gerlach of Jackson County, stopped and was taken into custody. He is currently in North Central Regional Jail on a misdemeanor charge of DUI causing injury. Bail is set at $5,000.

Both eastbound lanes of Route 50 are clear as of 9:15 a.m.
