Upshur County Family Celebrates 'Sweetest Day'

Posted: Updated:

For most people, Valentine's Day is that special day to shower your loved ones with gifts but Saturday marks another time to do the same.

October 19 is "Sweetest Day." Hallmark first started making cards for this little-known holiday in the mid 1960s but said it's been celebrated for almost 90 years.

Some people, like Sue Joslin and her family, say it's a time to get together. Joslin traveled to West Virginia from Pennsylvania for a mini family reunion.

"We have nine brothers and sisters, and their spouses, we're all celebrating this weekend. [The holiday] just means that if you have a sweetie, they can buy you something good or take you out somewhere," said Joslin.

"Sweetest Day" is observed the third Saturday in October every year.
