Monongalia County 'Girls on the Run' Program Expands to Five New Counties

Posted: Updated:
MORGANTOWN -

Girls on the Run of North Central West Virginia is a running program for girls in third through eighth grade in Monongalia County, and it's expanding its borders.

The mission is to inspire girls to be healthy and have fun through a 12-week running program to train for a 5k in Morgantown.

The program will be expanding this spring in Harrison, Marion, Preston, and Wetzel Counties.

"People love the program so they talk to their friends about it and we get calls. Over the last few years we've received calls from our neighbors in Marion, Preston, Harrison Counties," said Laurie Abildso, the Girls on the Run counsel director. "Our advisory board met over the last year and decided that we now have the staff support, volunteer support, to support an expansion."

Girls on the Run hopes to start its expansion by enrolling two schools in each county in the program.

If you would like to become a volunteer, running coach, or have an expansion site in mind for Girls on the Run head over to its website.

The deadline date to sign up to have a volunteer position or to put in an idea for an expansion site application is November, 15 2013.
